Pawan Kumar

Pawan Kumar is the founder of the Dignity and Rights Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing human dignity, equal rights, and legal protection for minority communities — established in Pakistan as the Dignity and Rights Foundation for Minorities in Pakistan.

Pawan was born and raised in Umerkot, Sindh, home to one of Pakistan's largest and most diverse minority populations. It was here that his understanding of rights and dignity first took shape — not as abstract legal principle, but as lived experience within a community for whom questions of equality, representation, and justice are part of everyday life.

He carried that understanding into the law. As a law graduate, Pawan went on to work at a law firm where he advanced efforts to protect human and minority rights across Pakistan, developing a close, practical understanding of the distance between the rights guaranteed on paper and the protections available in practice — and of what it takes to close that gap.

His work has been further shaped by his selection as a Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) Fellow, where he joined a global community of scholars, policymakers, and changemakers examining governance, security, and development — sharpening his conviction that human security and human rights are inseparable.

Today, Pawan's work sits at the intersection of law, justice, and human security: the belief that dignity is not granted but must be actively protected, and that lasting change requires both legal advocacy and durable institutions. It was this conviction that led him to found the Dignity and Rights Foundation — building institutions that stand with minority communities, in Pakistan and beyond, in their pursuit of equal rights and protection under the law.
